Do you want to help your child to become a successful reader? PALS at Home is a book consisting of over 80 games and activities that help build listening skills through fun activities. The book and games are targeted at children aged 5 – 7.
Description
This book provides over 80 activities and listening games that promote auditory skills and sound awareness. This includes discrimination (being a sound detective and identifying different sounds), memory, sequencing, rhyme, word play and playing with sounds in words. These focus areas have been specifically chosen because research has shown a direct relationship between phonological / sounds in speech awareness and success in reading and spelling.
While PALS at Home is a listening programme, pictures are used to support learning. These games and activities are intended to add to your “tool kit” of ways to engage with your child. It is better to play for 5 – 15 minutes every day than an hour once a week. Once you get the swing of things you won’t need the picture prompts and you will find yourself playing these games at random, using everyday items.
Concepts are hierarchical so it is best to work through the book systematically. However, you are greatly encouraged to revisit games and previously covered concepts regularly. As the saying goes, practise makes perfect!
