PALS is pleased to announce the launch of PALS Word Makers.
Make learning to read and spell multisensory and easier with PALS Word Makers!
PALS Word Makers are great for children embarking on their literacy journey as well as older children who need intervention. The magnetic tiles are easy to manipulate and when used with word chaining and other sound manipulating activities, children will be better able to crack the literacy code.
Making Words with PALS is perfect for beginner readers and spellers. Consisting of 56 magnetic tiles, the basic word maker has all the letter-sound combinations required for Grade 1. This includes:
- 26 single sounds
- “Floss rule” spelling choices (ll, ff, ss, zz)
- Consonant digraphs (ck, ch, sh, th, wh)

Consonant sounds are represented with black letters and vowel sounds are blue letters.
The magnetic tiles fit perfectly onto an A4 word-making board. Each tile has a demarcated “parking spot” to ensure that they are always in the same place and are easy to find.

Making More Words with PALS is the advanced word maker. The 100 tiles represent all the letter-sound combinations that children will need for Grade 2 and beyond. Making More Words with PALS includes:
- 26 single sounds
- “Floss rule” spelling choices (ll, ff, ss, zz)
- Consonant digraphs and trigraphs
- Vowel digraphs, trigraphs

Consonant sounds are represented with black letters and vowel sounds are blue letters.
The magnetic tiles fit perfectly onto a word-making board that is slightly smaller than A3. Each tile has a demarcated “parking spot” to ensure that they are always in the same place and are easy to find.
Why is word building important?
Our alphabet system is a code and knowing how to effectively decipher the code results in good readers and spellers. The letters of the alphabet are used alone or in combination to represent the sounds of spoken language. Understanding how the letters relate to the sounds is the basis of reading and writing.
Linking letters to their sounds in words is an effective way to develop sound-symbol relationships – the building blocks of literacy.
Building words helps to:
- Develop letter-sound relationships
- Integrate blending and segmenting skills
- Brain-map spelling patterns for automatic retrieval
