PALS provides a supplementary programme to the Grade R and Pre-Grade R curriculum and is designed to enhance the development of pre-literacy skills. The programme is fun and dynamic and uses engaging resources and games to optimise learning through play.
PALS at School is a weekly, in-class interaction between the PALS facilitator and the class. It is dedicated time for the children to learn phonological awareness concepts through games, songs and fun activities. The PALS facilitator brings a change of pace and energy to the classroom. The children learn through play and look forward to the sessions.
We know that not all learning styles are the same so concepts are explored visually, auditorily, kinaesthetically (using physical activities) and often musically. Games and activities are structured to allow for individual, pair or team involvement. The goal is for all children to be engaged all the time.
Lessons are 20-30 minutes long and class teachers are encouraged to stay in the classroom. This not only allows teachers the opportunity to observe their class “in action” while they are not teaching, it also adds to their basket of knowledge and provides tools for promoting phonological awareness skills every day.
The PALS at School programme has been developed using the key components of phonological awareness. Each week, different aspects are explored and developed. The lessons are goal-oriented and the children’s progress and performance is continuously monitored and assessed. Regular written feedback is provided to class teachers.
PALS at school runs from February to November and follows the government school term times.
We look forward to hearing from you so that we can discuss how PALS can be implemented in your school.
